Sense of Place, a solo exhibition by Hanneke Benadé

RENOWNED artist Hanneke Benadé invites you to experience her captivating new exhibition, Sense Of Place, opening at Union House in Cape Town on October 19, 2023. It will run until December 1.

For the past two decades, Benadé’s stunning pastel drawings have found their way into private homes and collections, both locally and abroad. Benadé’s signature style is characterised by her muse of powder pastels to create lifelike artworks. Unlike traditional art that aims to convey a specific message, her paintings invite viewers into a contemplative space, encouraging a personal dialogue between the artwork and the observer. In her own words, her art is akin to a silent movie or a freeze frame—a moment suspended in time.

With Sense Of Place, Benadé embarks on an exploration of the deep connections between subjects and their environments. She delves into the profound concept of a “sense of place”, which holds great significance for her as an artist. “It encompasses the intricate bonds we share with the landscapes – both physical and emotional – that we inhabit and how these landscapes influence our understanding of self,” says Benadé. The exhibition portrays an interplay of emotions, memories, and experiences that collectively shape our sense of place. Benadé employs metaphors, such as a chair, symbolising the act of claiming space – a place for rest, reflection, and a sense of belonging in both the tangible and abstract realms.

In addition to these works, Sense Of Place includes a series of smaller “portraits” of everyday objects found in the artist’s surroundings. These objects, ranging from flowers to spoons and tableware, also have their unique places in the world, albeit within more confined and less defined spaces.

The exhibition will be open to the public from Mondays to Fridays, between 9am and 4pm. For more information, call Spier Arts Trust on 021 461 2679.
