A new dining destination is firing up Bree Street: Maru Korean Steakhouse. Now open at number 107, Maru brings the heartbeat of modern Seoul to Cape Town with a bold promise: Where soul meets Seoul.
Maru is the latest addition to The PAN Collection Hospitality Group, the same team behind some of Cape Town’s most celebrated dining concepts including Burger & Lobster, Iron Steak and Bar, Hacienda Coastal Mexican, Scala, Nikkei Japanese Peruvian, and Yatai Ramenbar. With each restaurant in the group known for its distinct identity and uncompromising focus on quality, Maru continues this legacy with an innovative yet authentic approach to Korean dining.
Maru is a Korean steakhouse where old meets new, blending timeless tradition with modern flair. Bright neon lights, reminiscent of a bustling Seoul, are set against textured, minimalist materials to create the perfect balance between modern and traditional — a true reflection of contemporary Seoul.
At Maru, pride is taken in providing only the finest cuts of meat. Locally and sustainably sourced selections are grilled KBBQ-style to perfection and served alongside the crispiest Korean fried chicken in Cape Town.
Here, dining is about sharing. Small plates fill the table, flavours collide, and each bite is a new discovery. With every sizzle and every crunch, Maru delivers a culinary experience that is as soulful as it is unforgettable.
At the heart of Maru is an obsession with doing fried chicken better. It begins with free range chicken certified humane and raised without hormones or antibiotics for a richer and more natural flavour. The batter is a naturally gluten-free rice flour blend that is lighter, crispier and healthier, and every piece is fried in clean and sustainable cultured oil for a lighter finish.
Then comes the perfect pairing of champagne and chicken, where crisp bubbles cut through the richness and refresh the palate. Guided by the Korean philosophy of eum yang (yin and yang), Maru embraces balance, creating a menu that combines indulgence with wellness while keeping sustainability at its core.
Maru sources only grass-fed, hormone and antibiotic-free beef and Wagyu, showcasing the very best cuts South Africa has to offer. Every slice is grilled to perfection, honouring the KBBQ tradition of fire, flavour, and sharing. Saturdays at Maru are made for indulgence. From 12pm to 4pm, guests can order a bucket of Maru’s Korean Fried Chicken Set Menu and receive a complimentary bottle of Zardetto Prosecco (1 per 2 guests, Ts&Cs apply). Paired with beats from the resident DJ, it’s the perfect blend of Seoul spirit and Cape Town vibe.
Maru’s Happy hour will be Mondays to Sundays from 4pm to 5.30pm featuring half price on selected bubbles by the glass, wine and beer on tap accompanied by Korean style bar snacks at R95 each.
The Maru bar houses an expansive soju library, celebrating Korea’s most beloved spirit. Traditionally distilled from rice, soju is smooth, versatile, and best enjoyed neat. Whether you’re discovering soju for the first time or revisiting an old favourite, Maru’s bar promises to become a Cape Town hotspot.
“Our vision for Maru is simple,” says Paolo Carrara (director at the PAN Collection Hospitality Group) “We wanted to create a space where Cape Town diners could feel the pulse of Seoul, its flavours, its energy, its warmth, while still celebrating the best local ingredients and hospitality.”
