Genevieve Magua to make her Cape Town City Ballet lead debut

CAPE Town City Ballet will present a new production of Alice in Wonderland, by internationally acclaimed choreographer Gerard Charles, at Artscape from 12 to 28 December 2025. Making her CTCB debut in the lead role of Alice for three performances is Genevieve Magua.

“I’m so excited for my debut as Alice in our upcoming season of Alice in Wonderland,” says Magua. “It’s my first leading role so it feels very special and I’m honoured to bring this character to life.”

Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s timeless tales Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, this enchanting ballet promises a theatrical journey filled with whimsy, wonder and artistry. Audiences will follow Alice as she steps into a fantastical world teeming with curious creatures, mischievous characters and unforgettable adventures, all brought to life through Cape Town City Ballet’s signature blend of classical grace and vibrant storytelling.

“This production is absolutely magical. every scene is unique and visually captivating,” says Magua. “A lot of the magic actually comes from the full company working together during the scene changes. It creates such a seamless illusion especially in moments like Alice falling down the rabbit hole and all the twist of her journey through Wonderland. That’s what I love the most, that sense of adventure within the role, and the world she explores.”

Magua is 27 years old, born and raised in Cape Town. A passionate and dedicated artist, her ballet journey began at the age of three under the guidance of Karen Jooste, followed by further training with Megan Davey. At age 15, she embarked on her vocational training under the mentorship and guidance of Martin Schonberg, solidifying her foundation in classical ballet.

“I really hope to continue growing as a dancer and as an artist with Cape Town City Ballet. We have many exciting productions on the horizon and I’m looking forward to challenging myself further and hopefully more lead roles in the future,” she says.

The opportunity to pass on her knowledge and work with young talent is at the core of Magua’s equally important role as a teacher. “My intention is always to inspire the next generation to follow their dreams, and to show them what commitment to something you truly believe in can achieve,” she says.

“Marlin Zoutman, the director of New World Dance Theatre has created such a nurturing environment filled with incredible young dancers and it’s a privilege to be part of that.”

Genevieve is known for her unwavering commitment to her work, having built her career on the core values of hard work, resilience, and consistent practice, says New World Dance Theatre on its Instagram page. Magua echoes this and expands on it: “I think it’s important to be yourself. I don’t think there is only one path to a successful dance career but I do believe that discipline, resilience, commitment and an open mind, a sense of humour and a strong work ethic will always get you far.”

Magua’s performances take place on 13 December at 7pm, 14 December at 4.30pm, and 21 December at 12pm.

Alice in Wonderland will be presented at Artscape from 12 to 28 December 2025 with evening performances at 7pm and afternoon performances at 12pm, 2pm and 4.30pm. All performances will be danced to recorded music and tickets cost from R200 through Webtickets and Artscape Dial-A-Seat on 021 421 7695. No Under 5s at evening performances.
