2023 Wavescape Surf & Ocean Festival in March

AN ocean feast of 14 events has been confirmed for the 2023 Wavescape Surf & Ocean Festival presented by Vans in Cape Town from 2 to 25 March.

Organisers have confirmed the South African premiere of Birth of the Endless Summer at The Galileo Open Air Cinema in Kirstenbosch Gardens. Other anticipated documentaries will be screened in Scarborough, Khayelitsha and in Cape Town at the Labia Theatre.

Eight ocean gurus have signed up to entertain and inform at Slide Night with snappy 10 minute talks at the prestigious Centre for the Book in Cape Town. The flagship ocean evening takes place Wednesday 15 March. Speakers include Cormac Cullinan, who stopped seismic surveys off the East Coast, and marine scientist Dr Koebraa Peters, who uncovers an alien invasion.

Ten surfboards in the Wavescape Artboard Project will be auctioned for ocean charities at Jack Black’s Taproom on Wednesday 22 March. Artists include Brett Murray, Amy Ayanda, Amy-Lee Tak and Dbongz.

The Blue Ocean Masterclass focuses on aerial footage of the ocean, and includes discussion about regulations, drone technology, skills required and equipment. Gyrocopter pilot Jean Tresfon joins other experts in this popular filmmaking workshop.

The underwater cleanup with Beach Co-op off Jager’s Walk in Fish Hoek will this year be followed by a chat, while literally sitting in the ocean. This year, the Board Meeting day event again takes place at Jack Black’s Taproom, where surfers will be able to swap or buy each other’s surfboards. There will also be other fun activities for adults and children, from demonstrations by sustainable surf products and eco-conscious brands to children’s activities, set to the musical vibes of DJ Roastin’ Records.

Wavescape works with Sea Walls, the global PangeaSeed Foundation programme, to bring a message of ocean conservation to Cape Town streets via murals and events later in 2023. The festival rounds off with a special evening with Vans to present the premiere screening of the globally touted Humanity Stoked, a skateboarding documentary in person with director Michael Cohen, followed by an afterparty.
