T is for tasting at Blaauwklippen in Stellenbosch

IN Stellenbosch it’s perfectly acceptable to indulge in a macaron and wine pairing at 10am and call it breakfast.

This is my last letter – T – in the Stellenbosch Wine Routes A to Z of the wonderful winter winelands: Tasting Macarons and wine at Blaauwklippen.

Five beautiful smooth meringue confections in complementary paint box colours line up for your attention, with their accompanying wines. The Diva and Onse Sprankel sparkling wines are followed by Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel – a varietal not found much outside its California home but celebrated here at Blaauwklippen – and the Cabriolet red blend.

The macarons have deliciously generous thick creamy fillings and the flavours are pistachio, rosewater, raspberry, salted caramel and dark chocolate. One of the knowledgable staff in the new tasting room will guide you through the pairing and the thinking behind it, after which you are left to your own devices to continue as suggested or mix and match to discover new and interesting combinations.

Other options in the tasting room include a selection of any five wines, and a canapé and wine tasting.
