THE Pick n Pay Wine & Food Festival is back this year and looks forward to raising a glass to the country’s incredible wine makers after a tough two years of lockdown. The event will take place on Saturday 31 April and Sunday 1 May 2022, which is a long weekend, so all more reason to enjoy a wonderful day of wine tasting.

While Pick n Pay has hosted wine festivals around the country for a number of years, it formally launched its own wine festival in 2020 but the pandemic saw it taking a two-year hiatus. The festival is back and better than ever, with a range of new wines and the must-have favourites you’ve grown to love over the years.

More than 40 estates from wine-producing regions across SA will be represented at the event, and as always, festival goers can expect an abundance of choices, all of which will be available for purchase right there, at the same price you’d pay at the cellar door.

In an exciting development, ranges developed exclusively for Pick n Pay, in collaboration with wine producers, will be available to enjoy and purchase at the event as well. “These collaborations have truly cemented our position as ‘the home of South African wine’ and we are excited to bring our customers even more choices and fine wine at the most affordable prices,” says Gavin Ievers, head of Pick n Pay liquor.

“South African wines have an exceptional story to tell, and what better way than to tell it than in person, at a fully interactive food and wine experience?”

Exclusive wines on offer for your tasting pleasure include: The Masterpiece, from Bellingham, the most recent collaboration, comprising Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and a red blend; Jacques Steytler, boasting six varietals; Jacques Mouton, with a range of four wines; L’Avenir (six wines); Le Bonheur (five wines); and Great Heart (two wines). Other estates to look forward to at the event include Boekenhoutskloof, Simonsig, Pongracz, Kaapzicht and many more.

If you’re a bubbly lover, you’ll have a hard time moving beyond Pick n Pay’s dedicated new sparkling wine experience, where Cap Classique, Champagne and sparkling wine will abound for your tasting pleasure.

Where there’s wine, there’s food, and a bounteous feast awaits at the all-new Pick n Pay Gourmet Food Lane, where you’ll find the best the retailer has to offer, prepared by professional chefs. The ever-popular burger truck and coffee trailer will be there too.

Always a firm favourite is the Pick n Pay Tasting Room, where wine makers and professional chefs will present a culinary journey featuring exquisite wines superbly paired with melt-in-your-mouth canapés. The 30-minute sessions are hugely popular and sell out fast, so make sure you book early to secure your spot. After brushing up on wine knowledge with the experts at the tasting stalls, festival goers can buy their favourite wine and food choices and relax under the trees while soaking up the live entertainment, courtesy of popular local musicians.
