Are you ready for Middelvlei’s braaibroodjie challenge?

TRAVELLING is impossible at this stage, but transport your imagination to Middelvlei Wines, in the heart of the Stellenbosch winelands; a small yet dynamic farm, it has been owned and run by the Momberg family since 1919. As you enter the gates leading to the farm you are met by the breathtaking vineyard-strewn Amphitheatre, which overlooks the Bottelary Hills and the upper reaches of the Devon Valley.

This is where you will get to indulge in the popular boerebraai, a unique outdoor barbecue experience, and perfect for when you can safely venture outdoors again post lockdown. An integral part of South African heritage, the team at Middelvlei has taken this social event to the next level. Its resident braai expert prepares your chops, boerewors and chicken kebabs to perfection as you sit back, relax and sample the superb Middelvlei wines. The enticing aromas of the homemade potbrood and braaibroodjies give you a hint of what lies ahead for your foodie experience, while Ben Momberg’s homemade pâté and Ouma Annie’s pumpkin fritters have placed the boerebraai experience in a league of its own.

Make the most of the perfect Cape weather and sit outside on the sprawling verandah while admiring the views; on colder days the cosy fireplace inside will add extra warmth. The range of wines complements what can only be described as hearty South African comfort food. The selection includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Merlot and Pinotage.

The team at Middelvlei can’t wait to welcome visitors back to the farm, and while everyone is still safely in the confines of their homes, they are challenging aspiring chefs to showcase their interpretation of a braaibroodjie with the Braaibroodjie Challenge.

Simply share your photos of your lockdown braai with a pic of  your braaibroodjie and describe what ingredient you put on your sandwich. Post to your relevant social media platform, tagging Middelvlei Wines and include #braaibroodjiechallenge. Also say why it deserves to be included on the Middelvlei menu. The winner will receive a Braaibroodjie and Wine Pairing for two, post lockdown.
