AFTER a successful national tour, beloved South African comedian Kurt Schoonraad returns to the Mother City with relatable stories and his unmistakable take on everyday life. His one man show, Funny Side Up, is at the Homecoming Centre’s Avalon Theatre from 4 to 15 November 2026.
There’s no better place for Kurt Schoonraad to wrap up a year of touring than home.
Family. Relationships. Getting older. The strange things people do. The things that irritate us. The little moments we all recognise but perhaps don’t always admit to. These are the everyday ingredients that Schoonraad has turned into a comedy career spanning decades, and they are at the heart of Funny Side Up.
His style is familiar, observational and unmistakably South African, with stories that have audiences laughing because, more often than not, they recognise themselves somewhere in the madness.
“Funny Side Up is really about holding onto your sense of humour no matter what life throws at you,” says Schoonraad. “Sometimes you just need to forget your problems for a while, have a laugh and enjoy yourself.”
Cape Town is home and there’s something special about performing for your own people, especially when you’re ending a national tour, he says. “I’m really looking forward to finishing the year here, at the Homecoming Centre, with a room full of people ready to laugh.”
Audiences can expect the energy Schoonraad is known for, along with plenty of fresh material, new observations and stories inspired by the wonderfully unpredictable business of being human.
