Dutch National Ballet’s Maia Makhateli joins SANDT Legacy of Dance Gala

THE South African National Dance trust (SANDT) has announced that internationally acclaimed principal dancer Maia Makhateli (pictured) will join close to 100 dancers onstage in the upcoming Legacy of Dance Gala at Artscape Theatre Centre on 24 and 25 October 2026. Makhateli will replace her Dutch National Ballet (DNB) colleague Anna Ol, who is unfortunately unable to participate due to an injury. SANDT wishes Anna a full and speedy recovery.

A principal dancer with DNB, Maia Makhateli is internationally recognised for her exceptional technique, expressive artistry and commanding stage presence. Born in Georgia and trained at the Vakhtang Chabukiani State Ballet School in Tbilisi, Makhateli went on to build an international career spanning the United States, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. She joined Dutch National Ballet in 2007 and has since established herself as one of the company’s leading ballerinas, performing an extensive repertoire of major classical and contemporary roles. Her career has also seen her perform internationally as a guest artist, collaborating with leading dancers and companies around the world.

For the gala Makhateli will be partnered by Jan Špunda, who remains confirmed to perform as scheduled. Together, they will dance the iconic Black Swan pas did deux from Swan Lake Act lll and Ernst Meisner’s new classical Embers, bringing their artistry to the Artscape stage as part of an evening celebrating the enduring legacy, diversity and excellence of dance.

The Legacy of Dance Gala is ultimately a celebration of connection: between international and South African artists, across generations and between dance’s rich legacy and its future. Makhateli and Špunda will join dancers from several of South Africa’s leading professional companies, alongside emerging talent. SANDT looks forward to welcoming them all to the beautiful Artscape stage.
