Show your Saffa heart at Stellenbosch Hills Heritage pairing this September

SEPTEMBER is about roots and this year Stellenbosch Hills gets you back to yours with an all-new tasting to celebrate the diversity of South African heritage.

The country traditionally celebrates Heritage Day on September 24, but Stellenbosch Hills will proudly pluck the Saffa heart strings all month long. The winery is renowned for its unconventional wine and food pairings, and this coming month it lays on a fresh and delicious spread alongside award-winning wines. No matter if you prefer kief to lekker, awêh to ngca, Stellenbosch Hills will get you and your brasse amped.

Conceived in partnership with the Private Hotel School, the Heritage Food & Wine Pairing for September 2019 features a line-up of firm favourites for just R75pp. First up is the 1707 Reserve White 2018, a wine that won double gold at the National Wine Challenge/Top 100 South African wines competition. This elegant, voluptuous wine is resplendent with aromas of stone fruit, honey, zesty citrus and vanilla oak spice. The palate is elegant, rich, textured and balanced by lively citrus fruit and crisp acidity. It lingers seemingly forever on the finish. It is served in a perfect partnership with Cape Malay pickled fish and a slice of crisp, garlicflavoured bruschetta.

Then comes another top gun: the 1707 Reserve Red 2015 – a gold medal winner at Veritas 2017 among its many other accolades. The wine is full-bodied and seamless with an abundance of dark berry fruit, plums, dark chocolate and hints of black pepper and cigar box on the nose. The palate reveals well-balanced structure with juicy, yet firm tannin. Every sip concludes in a long lingering finish. This champion red shines delectably alongside boerewors-inspired meatballs served on oh-so-moreish home-made tomato chutney.

The parting shot into the sunset of culinary happiness is delivered by the stellar Stellenbosch Hills Muscat de Hambourg 2018 – the 30th anniversary vintage of this all-round favourite. Sunset coloured, the wine is explosively fragrant with candy floss, boiled sweets, rose petal and violets. On the palate, it’s elegant and beautifully balanced with great length and complexity. Its partner for the tasting is an equally popular stalwart – orange malva pudding dripping with a rooibos tea infused crème anglaise.

The Stellenbosch Hills Heritage Food & Wine Pairing takes place at the winery’s tasting room and is available Mondays to Fridays, 9am till 5pm, and Saturdays 10am till 3pm. The tasting can only be enjoyed through prior reservation, so get dialling.
