AMAZINK, a restaurant in the heart of Kayamandi, featured in the second season of popular TV show In Die Sop. Covid travel restrictions delivered a severe blow to the tourism and hospitality industry; kykNET’s In Die Sop with Bertus Basson has breathed new life into the space.
As South Africa’s first township dinner theatre, Amazink was beloved by locals and tourists. It featured vibrant and soulful local rhythms woven through life stories on stage. The lockdown and travel restrictions abruptly silenced it.
Bertus Basson was involved with Amazink in its very early days, so for him, it was a happy return to work with his team and the Amazink crew on a new concept that fits today’s needs. As one drives up Masithandane Road in Kayamandi, a mural by local artist Ley Mboramwe graces the front of the building. At the door, African beats draw one inside.
Chef Noxolo Klaas explains: “It was a privilege to have Bertus and his team here. They looked at Amazink with fresh eyes and spotted opportunities. We can’t wait to share our local hospitality with everyone!”
The menu celebrates the local tastes with grilled chicken, pap, spicy chakalaka and coleslaw. Bertus’s influence is evident in the details, from delicious homemade peri-peri sauce to the smooth running of the front-of-house.
“The vision for Amazink has always been to create a space where people who might not cross paths otherwise can sit around a table, talk, laugh and build friendships. And with us being open again regularly, we’re excited to see that vision grow,” adds Zintle Nomavuka, Amazink’s general manager.
Amazink is at 118A Masithandane Road, Kayamandi, Stellenbosch, and open Tuesday to Saturdays 11am to 6pm, and Sundays 12pm to 3pm. For more information, click here.
