Groote Post Vineyards unveils its 2023 Pinch of Salt Chardonnay

THE wine is a unique creation paying homage to the role of salt in winemaking. Groote Post’s commitment to crafting distinctive wines is evident in its track record, with standout brands like Salt of the Earth and Seasalter gracing the tables of wine connoisseurs.

The journey to this exceptional Chardonnay took nearly a decade. Winemaker Lukas Wentzel embarked on a meticulous process, replanting the vineyards with superior chardonnay clones and selecting optimal locations for cultivation. The Pentz family, owners of Groote Post, were captivated by the challenge of blending innovation with tradition, honouring their chardonnay’s rich history.

The birthplace of the Pinch of Salt Chardonnay is a south-facing dryland vineyard, caressed by the ocean’s breeze. To craft this wine, Wentzel employed a unique approach, fermenting it in three distinct vessels, much like a pinch of salt elevates the flavours in a dish. The recipe includes fifty percent stainless steel for a crisp character, thirty percent French oak for richness, and twenty percent ancient clay amphora for a unique fusion of tradition and innovation.

The outcome is a lightly wooded 2023 vintage, characterised by fresh acidity, minerality, and a zesty structure. The wine tantalises the senses with aromas of fresh stone fruit and vibrant citrus notes. On the palate, one can savour a steely minerality, accompanied by crisp citrus and yellow stone fruit flavours, all balanced by a long, zesty acidity. This exquisite creation leaves no room for additional enhancements.

Groote Post’s Pinch of Salt Chardonnay stands as a testament to the synergy of tradition and innovation, just like the salt that adds depth and flavour to every culinary creation. From the heart of the Darling region, it adds a new chapter to the winemaking heritage, bringing to life a wine that is worth its weight in salt, and so much more.
