Explore the evolution of McCauley and Zille in Shapeshifters

M-NET is shaking up the start of 2026 with an  local documentary series, Shapeshifters (from 11 February at 9pm), which takes an in-depth look at two South Africans who have reinvented themselves in ways that defied expectations: Ray McCauley, and Helen Zille.

The compelling three-part series examines these extraordinary figures who, over the course of their lives and careers, wore many hats – shifting identities and roles and leaving an indelible mark on society. Through deep-dive storytelling, archival footage and exclusive interviews, Shapeshifters uncovers their personal struggles, triumphs and the forces that shaped them.

South African pastor and TV evangelist Ray McCauley and his wife Zelda Ireland

Ray McCauley was South Africa’s ultimate shape-shifter: a bodybuilder who found God and built one of the country’s first megachurches. A holy man who divorced twice. A pastor with a mansion. From an apolitical pulpit to campaigning for Jacob Zuma. Were these genuine callings or calculated moves? In a country grappling with the world’s most acute inequality, who gets to thrive in the name of their God – and who pays the price?

Helen Zille’s story is one of a daughter of immigrants who rebelled as a teenager, overcame an eating disorder, became a journalist in a time when the truth was being conveniently buried and combined ground-breaking work with the challenges of being a woman in her profession. She was – and remains – a mother, a patriot and an activist. Hers is a story of political intrigue, treachery, floor-crossing, unlikely coalitions, public kissing, revenge, phone tapping, intimidation, freedom, leadership, identifying talent, facing criminal charges, navigating race politics, exposing state capture, delivering clean audits and taking accountability where many others in politics did the opposite.

“South Africa’s history is full of colourful characters who often divided opinion. The unprecedented access the producers of Shapeshifters had to our three subjects and, in the case of Ray McCauley, their confidants, makes these stories utterly compelling. We show the will, ambition, sacrifices and skill they required to evolve when they needed to,” says Waldimar Pelser, Director of Premium Channels at MultiChoice.

Produced by the award-winning team at IdeaCandy, Shapeshifters comes to M-Net from Wednesday 11 February at 9pm, and also on DStv Stream and Catch Up. For more, visit the M-Net website and join the conversation on X, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.
