JESSICA SAURWEIN celebrates a decade of Saurwein Wines with the first estate-made vintages of Nom Pinot Noir 2024, Om Pinot Noir 2024, and the acclaimed Chi Riesling 2025, crafted in her own cellar in Stanford.
The Saurwein story spans continents and centuries – from her ancestors making “sour wine” in 17th-century Austria to Jessica’s pursuit of elegant, terroir-driven wines from South Africa’s finest cool-climate sites: Elandskloof, Hemel-en-Aarde, Elgin, and Stanford.
With minimal intervention, Jessica lets the vineyards speak. The Chi Riesling 2025, made from Elgin and Hemel-en-Aarde grapes, is a floral, off-dry style that has positioned Saurwein among the elite South African Riesling producers. Jancis Robinson MW once declared it “possibly South Africa’s best Riesling.”
The 2024 Pinots, Nom and Om, reflect years of meticulous craft. Nom, from the red Bokkeveld shale of Elandskloof, is known for its depth and structure. Om, sourced from a high-lying site in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, has already earned 95 points from Christian Eedes and is praised for its bright red fruit, wild herb aromatics, and velvety mouthfeel.
Beyond winemaking, Saurwein is a family-driven endeavour. Jessica, her husband Roland Peens, and their two sons are committed to regenerative farming and a lifestyle of minimal inputs. This philosophy permeates every aspect of the brand, from farming to the hand-drawn label art by Isabella Kuijers, reflecting the flora and aromas of each wine.
Distributed across 16 export markets and locally via Ex Animo, Saurwein Wines has built a loyal following that values authenticity, story, and craft. Jessica’s next chapter includes planting her own organic Pinot Noir vineyard in Stanford and welcoming visitors through farm open days.
