La Petite Ferme Announces the Winner of The ZA Project

BOUTIQUE hotel and wine estate La Petite Ferme has announced the winner of The ZA Project: A Fusion of South African Art and Pinotage.

This initiative invited final-year illustration students from the Stellenbosch Academy of Design & Photography to design the label for La Petite Ferme’s 2024 limited-edition Pinotage, effectively blending South African art, culture and winemaking.

Thirteen students were selected to interpret South African heritage, terroir and culture into a wine label that reflects La Petite Ferme’s essence. After weeks of sketches and creative development, five impressive designs by Amelie Du Toit, Hannah Bruni, Jolien Koen, Michae Diamond and Olivia Hansen were shortlisted.

At a recent event in Franschhoek, Jolien Koen was announced as the winner.

Jolien’s label captures South Africa’s diverse landscapes—from the Karoo to the Garden Route—using a vibrant tapestry of birds, plants, soil, and vines. Her design celebrates resilience and craftsmanship, avoiding clichés in favour of authentic textures that honour the land and the wine produced from it. The winning label will be featured on the 2024 ZA Pinotage, which will be formally launched with tasting notes and professional photography.

Other remarkable designs included Amelie Du Toit’s tribute to the South African flag and Hannah Bruni’s celebration of cultural diversity through illustrated birds. Michae Diamond’s design featured hands gripping a vine, symbolising unity, while Olivia Hansen’s “Terroir” explored the connection between environment and identity through stunning visuals.

The ZA Project will continue annually, with new student-designed labels, ensuring a dynamic showcase of creativity. A rare and collectible wine, The ZA Pinotage is positioned as a premium wine within La Petite Ferme’s portfolio. Only 800 bottles will be produced annually, making it a collectible release. A portion of proceeds will support a public-funded art school.

“The ZA Project is a celebration of creativity, terroir and the next generation of South African artists,” says Wikus Pretorius, La Petite Ferme’s winemaker.
