A JOURNEY from rugby fields in Paarl to the vineyards of the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, grounded in place, purpose, and transformation, Burton Francis began life playing barefoot rugby in Paarl, a resilience that carried him into a professional rugby career in France, where he represented several teams as a fly-half.
Living abroad exposed him to wine culture, sparking a curiosity about how land and identity shape what is in the glass. That interest led him to Burgundy, where he studied at the Burgundy School of Business and completed an MBA in Wine and Spirits Business, immersing himself in the philosophy of terroir and the traditions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Returning to South Africa, he set out to create wines that express place and identity, choosing the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge for its cool climate and distinctive Bokkeveld shale soils. Working alongside winemaker Kevin Grant of Ataraxia Wines, he produces small-batch Chardonnay and Pinot Noir focused on elegance, balance, and authenticity rather than scale or excess. The philosophy is rooted in terroir, translating the region’s soils and climate into refined expressive wines.
The 2023 releases have received critical acclaim. The Chardonnay earned 93 points from Tim Atkin, showing notes of lemon, acacia, nougat, white pear, and lime pith with a linear, crystalline structure. The Pinot Noir scored 92 points, offering aromas of red cherry, plum, rhubarb, spice, and savoury depth with a velvety palate and lingering complexity. Production is limited, with just 1929 bottles of Chardonnay and 938 bottles of Pinot Noir, reflecting vineyard selection and oak maturation.
Beyond wine, the Francis Academy channels five percent of every bottle sold into youth development. It supports rugby training, equipment, and educational opportunities, while also introducing students to careers in the wine industry and linking sport, learning, and entrepreneurship.
Recent collaboration with the Pinotage Youth Development Academy (PYDA) has brought students from Paarl into the programme, expanding access to tourism and wine practitioner courses. Looking ahead, the planned Francis Foundation will further support transport, equipment, and participation, ensuring young people can engage.
Through wine, sport, and education, the story comes full circle, from soil to soul.
