IF there is one thing guaranteed to get me out of the house, it’s an invitation that includes the words “complimentary bubbly”.
The celebratory party for the return of DJ René for HQ’s Original Fridays did not disappoint. The promised bubbly flowed freely for the VIP guests, and a steady service of canapés kept our tummies lined. Those little mouthfuls of crispy pork belly were a winner.
Another thing “complimentary bubbly” will do is get the crowd to actually arrive on time – a rarity in Cape Town, where we are all far too cool to be the first ones there. Shortly after 6pm, the place was already full and DJ Rene laid down the beats with his signature live percussion.
These weekly events are a great way to get the weekend off to a spectacular start; while it continues late into the night – with dancing, I am told – diners can still sit down to their meal in another, quieter part of the venue, or upstairs, from where they can spectate. In fact, this would make a very cool date night, with a steak and chips before, during or after.
If you’re not going to have the famous sirloin with Café de Paris butter and fries, HQ has a great menu of tapas which you can order for your table to share, as well as fabulous cocktails. If you want a good place to sit and chill with your friends, I recommend you book a table (which has a built-in ice well and can be stocked with your beverage of choice). When the weather warms up a tad, the party will spill out into the courtyard which I know is one of those rare places that is sheltered from the south-easter in summer.
