IN the heart of the Stellenbosch Winelands is where you’ll find Middelvlei Wines, which has been owned and run by the Momberg family since 1919. As you enter the gates leading to the farm you are met by the breathtaking vineyard-strewn Amphitheatre, which overlooks the Bottelary Hills and the upper reaches of the Devon Valley.
This is where you will also get to indulge in the popular Boerebraai, a unique outdoor barbecue experience. An integral part of our South African heritage, the team at Middelvlei has taken this social event to the next level. Its resident braai expert prepares your chops, boerewors and chicken kebabs to perfection as you sit back, relax and sample the superb Middelvlei wines on offer. The enticing aromas of the homemade potbrood and braaibroodjies give you a sneak peek of what lies ahead for your foodie experience, while Ben Momberg’s homemade pâté and Ouma Annie’s pumpkin fritters have placed the Middelvlei Boerebraai experience in a league of its own.
Make the most of the perfect Cape weather and sit outside on the sprawling verandah while admiring the views. On colder days the cosy fireplace inside will add extra warmth. The range of wines perfectly complement what can be described as hearty South African comfort food. The selection of wines includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Merlot and a Pinotage.
At R225 a person your Boerebraai experience includes a starter and main course and is available seven days a week between 12pm and 3pm. A low carb and vegetarian option are also available. For a nominal additional charge why not include another South African classic for dessert? Malva pudding and ice cream is guaranteed to end off a perfect outing.
As Middelvlei is first and foremost a family owned establishment, the team strives to cater for all ages; while Mom and Dad are enjoying a glass of wine, the young ones can play in the sandpit, feed the farm animals, enjoy the open space on the kick bikes, or braai their own marshmallows. A special children’s meal at R60 a child is available to ensure their tummies are kept full (and happy).
