Chefs Warehouse Tintswalo Atlantic appoints new chef

CHEFS WAREHOUSE at Tintswalo Atlantic has announced the appointment of Cameron Smith who is taking over from Braam Beyers as head chef of the popular oceanside restaurant on the rocky shores of the Atlantic Ocean, below Chapman’s Peak Drive.

Beyers, who had been with the Chefs Warehouse (CW) group for almost seven years, has been in charge of the kitchen at CW Tintswalo Atlantic since it opened in November 2020. He is now off to Europe on an extended “learning holiday” to gain more experience and broaden his horizons internationally.

Cameron Smith, 29, joins the Tintswalo property from CW Maison, where he has been working as senior sous chef for the past year. Smith was born in the Eastern Cape and matriculated from St Andrews College in Makhanda before studying towards a BCom Finance at Varsity College in Cape Town. Working part time in the food and catering industry during his studies, he discovered a deep passion for food and flavour, which led him to change course to study Culinary Arts at the SA Chef’s Academy.

During the past seven and a half years Smith gained experience at a number of South Africa’s most recognised fine dining restaurants, mentored by some of the most respected chefs in the country. His career path took him from three years at La Colombe as commis chef under chefs Scott Kirton and James Gaag, to senior sous chef at La Petit Colombe in Franschhoek alongside chef John Norris-Rogers, before he moved over to Protégé where he was later promoted to head chef.  Staying in Franschhoek, he was then appointed as head chef of Le Petit Manoir. During this time when the pandemic brought the restaurant industry to a halt, he continued running Le Petit Manoir’s deli and take-away dining service, as well as preparing food for the soup kitchen of the Franschhoek feeding scheme.

In February 2022 he joined Liam Tomlin and the Chefs Warehouse group as senior sous chef to head chef David Schneider at CW Maison in Franschhoek, before the opportunity presented to lead the kitchen team at CW Tintswalo Atlantic (from June 2023), under chef patron Ivor Jones.

CW Tintswalo Atlantic is a multi-sensory dining experience where diners may immerse themselves in the idyllic views and fresh sea breeze on the deck or dine fireside in the contemporary dining room. The décor is understated, allowing surrounding ocean, mountain, fynbos and the unique food and wine experience to be the star attractions.

Beyers has spent the last month working alongside Smith to ensure a seamless transition in the CW Tintswalo Atlantic kitchen. Since opening two and a half years ago, the restaurant has performed consistently, receiving a number of local and international accolades. The same year it opened (2021), it was named one of the best new restaurants in the world on the Condé Nast Traveller Hot List. In 2022 it was voted South Africa’s Best Hotel Restaurant in the 2022 World Culinary Awards, and scooped a one-star rating in the 2022 Eat Out Awards, before it walked away with a Two Plate award in the 2023 Gourmet Guide ratings.

Smith’s new menu will be inspired by the Cape’s wintry weather and stormy seas. Building on Tomlin’s quality, fine-dining global tapas for 2 concept, he says: “We will continue to focus on ingredients that are fresh, local and sustainable, paying homage to the ocean on our doorstep. Diners may expect a menu that goes a little beyond traditional French cuisine to showcase some of South Africa’s many cultural influences, which will include a selection of more comforting dishes suited to the cooler season.”
